Creating a Square Video in OBS.

Go to OBS > Settings > Video.

Why would you need a Square Video.

Have you ever needed a specific aspect ratio for your videos, like a perfect square or a tall, portrait-style video? Whether you’re embedding a video on a website or preparing content for social media, OBS Studio allows you to easily create videos with custom resolutions.

The example of such a video created with OBS is the demo video I created on my Read Aloud Plugin page. here is the link Check out the demo video here.

How to Adjust the Video Resolution in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and navigate to Settings.
  2. Go to the Video section.
  3. In the Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution fields, you can change the aspect ratio by typing in custom dimensions manually.
    • For example, to create a square video, set both resolutions to 1080×1080, 720×720, or any other square dimensions.
    • You can use the drop-down options, but manually typing your desired resolution gives you more flexibility.
  4. Hit Apply and then OK to save your changes.

Note: Ensure that your aspect ratio is consistent between the Base and Output Resolution fields to avoid distortion.

Why Would You Need a Custom Resolution?

  • Embedding in Web Pages: If you’re embedding videos in a website, a smaller, more specific resolution might work better for your layout. A square video, for instance, can be more visually appealing in a small container.
  • Social Media Platforms: Popular platforms like Instagram or TikTok often favor videos with specific aspect ratios like 1:1 or 9:16 for optimized display.
  • Focus on Specific Content: Adjusting the resolution can allow you to zoom out, giving viewers a broader view of what you’re presenting without compromising the quality of the content.

Common Aspect Ratios to Consider:

  • 1:1 (Square): Ideal for social media posts and embedding in website layouts.
  • 16:9 (Landscape): Standard widescreen resolution for most modern platforms.
  • 9:16 (Portrait): Perfect for mobile-first platforms like Instagram Stories or TikTok.
  • 4:5 (Tall Portrait): Commonly used on Instagram posts and Facebook feeds.

By customizing your video resolution, you can tailor your content to your audience and the platforms you’re targeting.
